I think torpedo spam is better suited when fighting things like Titans or just fleets made up of fewer, larger and slower ships, where the high single target damage potential can take out unprepared Battleships fairly quickly. The Nova cannons can shoot past debris, don't get shot out by interceptors and turrets combined and it's not too hard to get the AI trapped in situations where they have several ships bunched up together, magnifying the total damage output of the Nova Cannon. While I will say im still no expert in multiplayer, having played the campaign multiple times over on hard, Nova cannon spam seems to get me a lot more mileage than torpedoes, especially against the Orks and Tyranids.
